Krachtig, maar niets forceren. Dat is prachtig.

Omdat Psallentes vzw structurele steun ontvangt van de Vlaamse overheid, dienen we jaarlijks een verantwoording in over onze werking. Dat dossier is net vertrokken. Zo’n verantwoording vraagt cijfers, tabellen, toelichtingen, bijlagen en de nodige ernst. Maar het dwingt je ook om nog eens goed terug te kijken.

En dan blijkt dat 2025 voor Psallentes best een mooi jaar was – niet zonder kanttekeningen. De verkoop was eerlijk gezegd aan de magere kant, en sommige uitkoopsommen waren dat ook. Maar inhoudelijk gebeurde er veel: concerten, opnames, lezingen, workshops, film. Manuscripten (waaronder ‘het oudste boek van Antwerpen’) en locaties (waaronder het kerkje met zowat de oudste muur van Nederland). Zoals zo vaak bij Psallentes stond het woord ‘erfgoed’ virtueel in de ondertitel. Daar houden we wel van.

Misschien ligt onze sterkte precies daar: in de omgang met erfgoed dat vaak moeilijk zichtbaar (of liever: hoorbaar) is. Muziek die ergens in een handschrift ligt te wachten, op perkament of papier, in noten die als muziek opnieuw geboren moeten worden. Wij proberen dat erfgoed niet luid te claimen, maar het bescheiden tot leven te brengen.

Een belangrijk zwaartepunt was dit jaar Sauvegarde, ons project rond achthonderd jaar Begijnhof Brugge. Daarin kwamen veel lijnen samen: Brugse manuscripten, het begijnhof als plek, de bewoners van vandaag, oude gezangen, nieuwe beelden, een cd, een film, gesprekken, concerten. Alles wat we muzikaal uit de archieven haalden was in zekere zin ‘bescheiden’: rustig, klein, innig, verstild, teder, lief. Een mooie vorm van bescheidenheid, vinden we.

En misschien is dat ook een vorm van kracht. Niet de kracht van volume, spierballen of grote gebaren, maar die van focus en concentratie. Een kracht die zich naar binnen richt, die durft vertragen. We herkennen die ook in onze omgang met Hildegard von Bingen: uitvoeringen die niet ‘spectaculair’ willen zijn, maar die, als je de essentie de ruimte geeft, een enorme intensiteit ontwikkelen.

2025 bracht ook nieuwe opnames rond Assumptio (een ‘ToMemling’-aflevering, release misschien eind 2026) en Les Dames de Marche-les-Dames (roepnaam Bernardus, release waarschijnlijk eind deze zomer). We zongen en werkten op veel verschillende plekken, met een hechte groep zangeressen die intussen een groot deel van het geheugen van Psallentes meedraagt.

We zijn zoals steeds erg dankbaar voor de steun van de Vlaamse overheid, en ook voor de jaarlijkse steun van de Stad Leuven. Daarbij komen de bijdragen van onze ‘Centimeters’ (zie onder). En natuurlijk is er ons publiek. Zonder jullie heeft het allemaal geen zin.

[FR] Comme Psallentes vzw bénéficie d’un soutien structurel du Gouvernement flamand, nous introduisons chaque année un rapport justifiant nos activités. Ce dossier vient de partir. Un tel rapport demande des chiffres, des tableaux, des explications, des annexes et le sérieux nécessaire. Mais il oblige aussi à regarder encore une fois attentivement en arrière.

Et il apparaît alors que 2025 fut, pour Psallentes, une assez belle année – non sans quelques réserves. Les ventes ont été, honnêtement, plutôt maigres, et certains cachets l’étaient aussi. Mais sur le plan du contenu, il s’est passé beaucoup de choses : concerts, enregistrements, conférences, ateliers, film. Des manuscrits – dont ‘le plus ancien livre d’Anvers’ – et des lieux – dont la petite église possédant à peu près le plus ancien mur des Pays-Bas. Comme souvent chez Psallentes, le mot ‘patrimoine’ figurait virtuellement en sous-titre. Et cela nous plaît.

Peut-être est-ce là que réside notre force : dans notre manière d’approcher un patrimoine souvent difficilement visible – ou plutôt audible. Une musique qui attend quelque part dans un manuscrit, sur parchemin ou sur papier, dans des notes qui doivent renaître comme musique. Nous essayons de ne pas revendiquer ce patrimoine à grands cris, mais de le faire revivre modestement.

Un point fort important de cette année fut Sauvegarde, notre projet autour des huit cents ans du Béguinage de Bruges. Beaucoup de lignes s’y rejoignaient : manuscrits brugeois, béguinage comme lieu, habitants d’aujourd’hui, chants anciens, images nouvelles, un CD, un film, des rencontres, des concerts. Tout ce que nous avons tiré musicalement des archives était, en un sens, ‘modeste’ : calme, petit, intime, retenu, tendre, doux. Une belle forme de modestie, selon nous. Non comme posture, non comme humilité affichée, mais comme qualité propre de la musique.

Et peut-être est-ce aussi une forme de force. Non pas la force du volume, des muscles ou des grands gestes, mais celle de la focalisation et de la concentration. Une force tournée vers l’intérieur, qui écoute, qui ose ralentir. Nous la reconnaissons aussi dans notre approche de Hildegarde de Bingen : une musique qui ne cherche pas à être ‘spectaculaire’, mais qui, si on lui laisse de l’espace, développe une intensité considérable.

2025 a également apporté de nouveaux enregistrements autour d’Assumptio – un épisode ‘ToMemling’, sortie peut-être fin 2026 – et de Les Dames de Marche-les-Dames – nom de travail Bernardus, sortie probablement à la fin de cet été. Nous avons chanté et travaillé dans de nombreux lieux différents, avec un groupe soudé de chanteuses qui portent désormais une grande part de la mémoire de Psallentes.

Comme toujours, nous sommes très reconnaissants du soutien du Gouvernement flamand, ainsi que du soutien annuel de la Ville de Louvain. À cela s’ajoutent les contributions de nos ‘Centimètres’ — voir ci-dessous. Et bien sûr, il y a notre public. Sans vous, tout cela n’a aucun sens.

[ENG] Because Psallentes vzw receives structural support from the Flemish Government, we submit an annual report on our activities. That dossier has just been sent off. Such a report requires figures, tables, explanations, appendices and the necessary seriousness. But it also forces you to look back once more, and properly so.

And then it turns out that 2025 was quite a good year for Psallentes – not without a few reservations. Sales were, honestly, on the modest side, and so were some of the fees. But in terms of content, a lot happened: concerts, recordings, lectures, workshops, film. Manuscripts — including ‘the oldest book of Antwerp’ — and places — including the little church with what is more or less the oldest wall in the Netherlands. As so often with Psallentes, the word ‘heritage’ virtually appeared in every subtitle. We rather like that.

Perhaps that is exactly where our strength lies: in dealing with heritage that is often difficult to see — or rather, to hear. Music waiting somewhere in a manuscript, on parchment or paper, in notes that have to be born again as music. We try not to claim that heritage loudly, but to bring it modestly to life.

An important focus this year was Sauvegarde, our project around eight hundred years of the Bruges Beguinage. Many threads came together there: Bruges manuscripts, the beguinage as a place, today’s residents, ancient chants, new images, a CD, a film, conversations, concerts. Everything we drew musically from the archives was, in a sense, ‘modest’: quiet, small, intimate, still, tender, gentle. A beautiful form of modesty, we think. Not as a pose, not as humility, but as a quality of the music itself.

And perhaps that, too, is a form of strength. Not the strength of volume, muscles or grand gestures, but that of focus and concentration. A strength that turns inward, that listens, that dares to slow down. We also recognise it in our approach to Hildegard von Bingen: music that does not seek to be ‘spectacular’, but that, if you give it space, develops an enormous intensity.

2025 also brought new recordings around Assumptio — a ‘ToMemling’ episode, perhaps to be released at the end of 2026 — and Les Dames de Marche-les-Dames — working title Bernardus, probably to be released at the end of this summer. We sang and worked in many different places, with a close-knit group of female singers who by now carry a large part of Psallentes’ memory.
