Psallentes (°2000) legt zich toe op gregoriaans en aanverwante meerstemmigheid. In de afgelopen 22 jaar hebben we tweehonderd projecten gerealiseerd. Onze aandacht voor de oudste vocale muziek is uniek. Onder meer door het onderzoekswerk van artistiek leider Hendrik Vanden Abeele — die op het thema in 2014 promoveerde aan de Universiteit Leiden — staat onontgonnen repertoire centraal, genomen uit laatmiddeleeuwse manuscripten.

We begonnen als mannenensemble, aantredend in de context van projecten van Capilla Flamenca (wijlen Dirk Snellings). Vanuit ons exploreren van vrouwelijke thema’s (muziek uit begijnhoven, liederen van Hadewijch, muziek van Hildegard von Bingen…) ontwikkelde Psallentes zich tot vrouwenensemble. Dertig albums werden op de markt gebracht, bij labels als Ricercar, Accent en Le Bricoleur.

We concerteerden doorheen Europa en in Noord-Amerika.

Psallentes werd in 2018 door Klara genomineerd als Ensemble van het Jaar. In 2019 was Hendrik Vanden Abeele Artist in residence op het ‘Muziekkasteel Landcommanderij Alden Biesen’. In die context realiseerden we met Psallentes de op gezinnen gerichte muzikaal-filmische wandeling ‘Punica granatum’, in de Engelse tuin van de commanderij.

Psallentes is een illustratie van de kracht van muziek van voor 1600. Daarover verscheen het boek ‘De Stilte van de Muziek voor Bach’, van Liesbet Vereertbrugghen, Nicole Van Opstal en Hendrik Vanden Abeele (Borgerhoff & Lamberigts met Klara, 2020), waarin opnames van Psallentes prominent aanwezig zijn.

PSALLENTES (CEUX QUI CHANTENT)

Ensemble grégorien fondé en 2000 par Hendrik Vanden Abeele, Psallentes et ses chanteurs professionnels explorent l’essence du chant grégorien à travers les différentes époques de l’histoire. Une attention particulière est accordée au chant grégorien du bas Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance. La compréhension en est alimentée par une étude basée sur la pratique, telle qu’elle est menée par Hendrik dans le cadre de son projet de doctorat sur la pratique de l’exécution du chant grégorien du bas Moyen Âge à l’Université de Leiden.

Toutes sortes de concerts ont été donnés, de nombreux CD ont été enregistrés, souvent en collaboration avec des ensembles renommés comme Capilla Flamenca et Millenarium, ou avec des organistes tels que Arnaud Vande Cauter et Joris Verdin. Au cœur de ces projets, on retrouve fréquemment l’alternatim grégorien, une pratique de l’exécution qui souligne l’importance d’un contexte grégorien lors de l’exécution de musique datant du bas Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance. En outre, Psallentes réalise également de nombreux projets ‘solo’, parmi lesquels le très apprécié Memorabilia, une évocation de l’office du bas Moyen Âge pour la fête de la Sainte Trinité, et sa suite, le pénétrant Gesta Sancti Lamberti.

Psallentes s’est produit sur de nombreuses scènes, petites ou grandes, à travers l’Europe, du modeste festival Musica Sacra à Bever à la Konzerthaus de Vienne, en passant par les festivals Laus Polyphoniae à Anvers et Oude Muziek Utrecht, ou encore par le spectacle promotionnel REMA à Valence.

Alors que Psallentes n’existait à l’origine que dans une version masculine, son pendant féminin a vu le jour en 2007. Il est frappant de constater à quel point des intentions initialement similaires en matière d’exécution de chants grégoriens du bas Moyen Âge résultent toutefois, dans les deux versions de l’ensemble, en une esthétique totalement différente (mais néanmoins compatible). Les deux ensembles contribuent ainsi, chacun à leur façon, à l’approfondissement de notre expérience du chant grégorien et de la polyphonie apparentée.

PSALLENTES (THE SINGING ONES)

The ensemble Psallentes was founded in 2000 by singer and conductor Hendrik Vanden Abeele. The ensemble seeks out plainchant and associated polyphony from various historical periods. Particular attention is paid to plainchant of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Gradually, polyphony has taken on an increasingly important role within the work of Psallentes. In 2015, they brought a new CD with the ‘Musique en Wallonie’ label, featuring the music of Antoine de Févin, as found in a unique sixteenth-century manuscript from Tournai that contains both plainchant and polyphony. The same combination of plainchant and polyphony in a single manuscript is also found in the Alamire Manuscript B-Br 215-216 of the Royal Library of Belgium. The women singers of Psallentes performed the intense ‘Mater Dolorosa’ from that manuscript at Laus Polyphoniae Antwerp 2015.

Psallentes is also increasingly enthusiastic about partnering with museum projects. Thus the ensemble recorded the full contents of a sixteenth-century processional for the ‘Begijnhof museum’ in Turnhout (starting in 2015) and worked closely with an exhibition about music in Van Eyck’s altarpiece the ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ (at the Carmelite convent in Ghent, 2015-2016) and with the new church treasure-museum ‘Teseum’ in Tongeren (2016). They are currently preparing a new project, ‘Salzinnes Saints’, featuring the music from a beautiful sixteenth-century manuscript, held in Halifax, Canada.

Psallentes has given concerts at a great many venues, large and small, throughout Europe – from the intimate Musica Sacra festival in Bever through the Laus Polyphoniae concert series in Antwerp, the Utrecht Early Music festival, the ‘Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ’ in Amsterdam and the REMA showcase in Valencia to the Vienna Konzerthaus.
