[ENG] Last week, rehearsals have started for ‘Maria! Maria!’. In this programme, the ensembles Psallentes [B] and Gemma [SE], under the direction of Karin Strinnholm Lagergren, present a selection of a beautiful repertoire in a garland of chants from the order of the Birgittines.
In the middle of the 14th century, one of the most unique orders in the flora of monastic life was born: the Order of the Birgittines, founded by St. Birgitta of Sweden (c. 1303-1373). One of the unique musical features is that this is the only monastic order with a repertoire of plainchant only intended for nuns: the Office chant the Cantus Sororum (the Song of the Sisters). Moreover: it is also the only monastic repertoire given directly by its founder to its users. The chants are a mix of melodies and texts from the common stock of Gregorian chant and a large amount of pieces unique to the order. The chants are almost exclusively in honour of the Virgin Mary.
The concert at Abdij van Park Heverlee on 20 November 2015 ends Karin’s three year research project The Transmission of the Cantus Sororum in the Low Countries, which has investigated the unique chant of the Birgittine nuns.

[NL] Afgelopen week zijn de repetities begonnen voor ‘Maria! Maria!’. In dit programma brengen de ensembles Psallentes [B] en Gemma [SE], onder leiding van Karin Strinnholm Lagergren, een selectie van liederen uit het mooie repertoire van de orde van de Birgittinessen.
De Heilige Birgitta van Zweden (c. 1303-1373) stichtte midden veertiende eeuw een unieke kloosterorde, de Orde van de Birgittijnen. Een bijzonder muzikaal kenmerk is dat deze kloosterorde een repertoire van Gregoriaanse gezangen bezit dat uitsluitend voor zusters bedoeld was: de Cantus Sororum (het Lied van de Zusters). Bovendien is het de enige orde waar het repertoire rechtstreeks doorgegeven werd van de stichteres aan de gebruikers. De gezangen bevatten enerzijds melodieën en teksten uit het gekende gregoriaanse repertoire, maar anderzijds ook een groot aandeel van unieke stukken specifiek voor de orde. De liederen zijn bijna uitsluitend gewijd aan Maria.
Dit concert ter Abdij van Park Heverlee op 20 november 2015 is het eindpunt van Karin’s driejarig onderzoek The Transmission of the Cantus Sororum in the Low Countries, dat de unieke liederen van de Birgittijnse zusters onderzocht.
